Wildlife Camera on Pezula Private Estate

Scientists around the world make use of a conservation tool known as a camera trap in order to monitor wildlife. These cameras, which are mounted to a fixed point, for example a tree, are equipped with infrared sensors that take a picture whenever they sense movement within 6 to 12 meters of this device.

Pezula purchased a camera trap in 2006 in order to monitor the movement and habits of the wildlife on the estate. To date the camera has been placed mostly in the forest areas. It has provided us with data confirming the occurrence of many faunal species as well as the vulnerable blue duiker (Philantomba monticola) which faces a high risk of extinction. The camera is moved every so often so as not to allow the fauna to become used to the camera’s flash which would result in the animals avoiding the area.
